Checkers is a game for two players on the dark squares of an eight by eight board. Pieces move diagonally and capture by jumping over the other player's pieces. A player who takes all of the other player's pieces, or leaves them without a move, wins.
Rules
- Each player has 12 pieces, set out on the dark squares of the three rows nearest them. Black sits at the bottom and Red at the top.
- Black moves first. Players then take turns, each moving one of their own pieces.
- A piece moves one square diagonally forward, onto an empty square.
- A piece captures by jumping diagonally over an opponent's piece beside it, onto the empty square just beyond, and the jumped piece is removed. A piece that is not a king captures only forward.
- Capturing is compulsory. If any of a player's pieces can jump, the player must jump, though they may choose which jump.
- If the piece that jumped can jump again, it must, and it keeps jumping until no jump is left.
- A piece that reaches the far row is crowned a king, and the turn ends there. A king moves and captures one square diagonally in any direction.
- A player with no pieces left, or no legal move, loses.
- If 40 moves in a row, counting both players' moves, bring no capture and no move by an uncrowned piece, the game is a draw.
